Fish & Ships
Summer Term 2017
Share Heritage
St. Peter's Church of England Primary School was first established in 1872 to serve the fishing community. 'Fish & Ships' was an opportunity for todays pupils to connect with the heritage of their school and the traditions that live on, including the Blessing of the Fisheries.
Visit
This rich identity and local history of the fishing industry can be explored at a number of sites and organisations within Folkestone. The pupils of St. Peter's enjoyed visits to: Folkestone Trawlers Ltd. to experience how the sea continues to provide food and employment; Folkestone's Fishing History and Heritage Museum, to see the incredible collection and displays held near the Harbour Arm, as well meet historians and retired fisherman; National Coastwatch Institution, where volunteers demonstrate their valuable work which keeps our waters safe.
Learn Skills
The Fish & Ships project gave opportunity to reconnect with local history and the environment. The workshops and visits introduced participants to a number of creative and practical skills, including net and knot making, print making and mixed media displays.
'Fish & Ships' is a collaborative project with St. Peter's Church of England Primary School, artists supported by Folkestone Fringe, National Coastwatch Institution, Folkestone's Fishing History and Heritage Musuem and Folkestone Trawlers Ltd. Its aim is to create opportunities for the pupils and the wider community to develop their knowledge about the local area, specifically its fishing heritage. The project took place whilst Folkestone's Harbour is undergoing a current transformation.
